A Better Chance Inc. is the oldest, largest and only national program providing academically talented minority children with access to some of our nation’s finest college preparatory schools, both private and public.
More than 300 independent secondary boarding and day schools across the United States comprise the Member Schools Program. A Better Chance of New Canaan is among 22 Community School Program houses across the country. Community School Programs (or CSP’s) are unique in that the students reside in the local community and attend the local public high school.
Since its founding in 1974, A Better Chance of New Canaan’s mission has been unchanged: to offer capable minority youth the opportunity to learn in a superior educational program that will affirm and nurture their academic talent, while also preparing them to assume positions of responsibility and leadership in American society.
Each year, ABC of New Canaan selects promising scholars from the tri-state area to attend New Canaan High School. Students enter as high school freshman. During the academic year, the students live in a house owned and maintained by A Better Chance, Inc. of New Canaan. The house accommodates up to eight male students, resident directors and family, and two resident tutors.
The ABC students are encouraged to become an integral part of the New Canaan community. Every Sunday and for one full weekend per month, our students join their local host families. The students participate in sports and other extracurricular activities at New Canaan High School, and many volunteer their time to local charitable organizations.
